Abstract
Coal is an insoluble solid material. It is not composed of a single molecule; but rather, it is a complex mixture of different molecules having a variety of structures. These molecules are known to consist mostly of carbon, hydrogen and other heteroatoms such as sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen including various functional groups which may serve as linkages between molecules. The total and complete structure of any particular coal is unknown to chemists.
