Abstract
The main objective of this thesis is the investigation of the process of sexual union in Schizophyllum commune Fries. Interest in the fungus has been growing since the peculiar split gills of the fruiting body were first observed over 200 years ago. Interest was added by the fact that each cell was found to contain two nuclei and that a number of mating types were found. A large number of genetical studies has been done, and the author is of the opinion that these studies would be of a greater value if they could be further interpreted on a firm cytological basis.
