Abstract
A review of the literature concerning abuse of the elderly is presented to guide nurses in identification, intervention, and prevention of abuse. Five types of abuse are discussed : physical, psychological, material, active neglect, and passive neglect. Incidence of abuse is explored. A profile of the abused elder includes behavioral and physical indicators. A profile of the abuser is also included. Assessment of the elder and caretaker, along with a review of assessment tools is presented. Interventions including professional, legal, and preventative actions are reviewed. Implications for nursing, legal, definitional, research, and social areas are identified.
