Abstract
This essay presents a theoretical definition of the nursing diagnosis, Spirirtual [sic] Distress. Indicators of spiritual distress are developed through a review of literature using Stallwood and Stoll's five basic needs for relationship as a framework. An instrument to measure distress of the human spirit in the responsive adult is developed from the indicators. Preliminary reliability and validity testing is reported.
