Abstract

This paper reviews the literature on families of intensive care patients, using a framework on levels of coping adapted from Garland and Bush (1982). Stressors from families encountered by nurses, and stressors and needs of families are identified. Assessment methods and strategies to meet families' needs and assist families to help meet patients' needs are reviewed. Nursing implications for practice and research are identified in the essay.
