Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the dilemmas encountered by a group of nurses attempting to implement a concept of nursing into their practice. Twelve nurses employed at a large metropolitan teaching hospital were studied. Data collection consisted of complete written recordings of twelve one-hour group meetings of these nurses using a participant-observation format. Data was analyzed using Argyris and Schon's process of theory building as a framework. Five dilemmas and specific conflicts contributing to these dilemmas were identified. Of the five dilemmas of inconsistency, incongruence, effectiveness, value, and testability, inconsistency was encountered most frequently.
