Abstract
Guidelines for conducting a hospital tour were developed for use with six to eight year old children during a hospital tour. The guidelines were designed for nurses to provide information concerning hospitalization in a nonthreatening manner. A review of literature describes the cognitive development and fears and fantasies during early latency and variations in hospital tours. The guidelines focus on the length and size of the tour, parental participation, environment and presentation of the tour, and observations of the children. It is hoped that the child's anxiety will be decreased concerning future hospitalization if nonthreatening information is presented in a safe environment.
