Abstract
Today's health care is being closely scrutinized by the American public. Escalating health care costs have lead all those involved to demand something be done. Along with the concern for rising costs is the concern for quality. Health care organizations need to consider both cost and quality to survive in today's market. A method which has been proposed to do this is a new management philosophy known as Total Quality Management. Total Quality Management focuses on doing the right thing, the right way, the first time, every time. The outcome is a savings in costs and a quality product or service. The purpose of this essay is to do a critical analysis of the philosophy of Total Quality Management. This will include a discussion of each of the components of Total Quality Management and its impact on the business industry and on the health care industry. Finally, the implications of Total Quality Management on the role of the Nurse Executive and on nursing as a profession will be discussed.
