Abstract

Pteroylglutamic acid and its conjugated forms have been used in the treatment of pernicious anemia. An enzyme capable of converting the conjugated forms to pteroylglutamic acid has been purified (1) and has recently been identified as glutamic acid carboxypeptidase (2). Interest in the physiological role of pteroylglutamic acid was further stimulated by the subsequent discovery of its inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase in vitro (3) and in bone marrow cultures (4). It was considered to be of interest to study the xanthine oxidase system in general and the inhibition of this system by pteroylglutamic acid and its conjugates in particular.
