Abstract

Ethical issues permeate the practice of the nurse administrator. This essay presents a model for ethical decision making specifically designed for the nurse administrator. The components of the model are: (1) domain identification, (2) value systems, (3) power and (4) evaluation. Utilization of the model is presented using a fictitious case study. Supplementing the model is a historical account of the evolution of nursing ethics from 1900 to the current times. Moral maturation is addressed separately and in combination with ethical analysis and managerial decision making.
