Abstract
Ever since Jayle observed the existence of hemoglobin-binding protein in human serum, considerable interest in its function and alterations in health and disease has been shown by clinical investigators. Titrimetric and electrophoretic methods, difficult and time consuming, have been devised for its quantitative evaluation. The haptoglobin determination has replaced the routine sedimentation rate in many hospitals in France. Despite intensive studies of haptoglobins in the United States, they have so far remained within the domain of research. The work described in the following pages attempts to bridge the gap between research and clinical applications. Although anticipated results may not have been achieved, it is hoped that the principles underlying this work may at some future time assist in further studies of haptoglobin.
