Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to develop a tool that would: (1) examine the questions/concerns of the cardiac couple; (2) determine the couple's preferred means of discussing and obtaining sexual information; and (3) begin to isolate the premorbid factors that may have a predictive function in identifying couples at risk of sexual dysfunction post-myocardial infarction. Dengrove's five variables predictive of sexual dysfunction following illness, i.e. premorbid state, pathophysiologic effects of the disease, psychological state, effects of treatment and reaction of the spouse served as the framework for the development of the tool. Content validity was obtained: (1) through a thorough review of the literature; (2) by consultation with three clinical specialists in cardiovascular nursing or sexuality, and (3) by rating of each item in the tool by three. nursing specialists. Suggestions are presented for utilization of the tool in practice and research.
