Abstract

Twenty adult insulin-using diabetics were interviewed to determine signs and symptoms they perceived at the onset and throughout a hypoglycemic episode. Data were collected to determine the range of signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia experienced, frequency with which signs and symptoms were experienced, what signs and symptoms were experienced initially, as well as the terminology used by participants to describe signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia. The range of signs and symptoms reported by participants was similar to signs and symptoms reported in the literature. Data concerning initial signs and symptoms, frequency of report of signs and symptoms, and terminology used were analyzed. The significance of the findings for nursing practice is discussed.
