Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if the postmyocardial infraction patient received information regarding sexuality. Two questions were possed: (1) What information did the postmyocardial infraction patient in the acute care setting receive about sexuality? (2) How did the postmyocardial infraction patient receive information about sexuality, that was who provided the information and what method was used to present the information? Twenty patients between the ages of thirty to seventy years old who have been hospitalized for the first myocardial infraction were studied. All subjects were asked to complete the Marquette University Human Subjects' Protection Form. A questionnaire was administered by the investigator the night before the patient's discharge. Results showed that although information regarding anatomy and physiology of the heart was discussed with 93% of the patients, 73% of the patients were not given an opportunity to discuss sexuality, and 73% of the patients stated that their mates were not included in a conversation about sexuality. Seventy-three percent of the patients were not given information about pacing of sexual activities or what to do if they experienced angina during intercourse.
