Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to develop information for parents to use in preparing their preschool child for orthopedic cast removal. A review of the literature included: developmental characteristics of the preschool child; preschooler's perception of health care procedures; and the methods of preparing the preschool child for health care procedures. Based upon the review of the literature, the information was developed and included in a letter to be given to parents of preschool children who require the application of an orthopedic cast. The purpose of the information is to assist the parents in understanding the specific stressors and needs that arise when their child is admitted to the orthopedic clinic for cast removal. In addition, it provides the parents with the sequential and sensory information needed to prepare their child for orthopedic cast removal. The expected outcome is that the information provided will enhance the parents ability to help their child cope in a manner the child will find most effective in meeting his or her own needs. In addition, the parents will feel more confident in their ability to take an active role in the support of their child, thereby, decreasing their own feelings of anxiety.
