Abstract
The nutritional status of mechanically ventilated patients can directly influence clinical outcome. Malnutrition has profound effects on the respiratory system. Inadequate nutritional support can alter pulmonary structure and function and may precipitate failure. Patients with underlying pulmonary dysfunction require individualized nutritional therapy and close monitoring of the effect of therapy. The purposes of this essay are to review the literature relating the effects of malnutrition on the respiratory system, scrutinize nutritional assessment techniques, examine special nutritional requirements of patients with pulmonary dysfunction and failure, and establish guidelines for assessment of nutritional status and monitoring efficacy of nutritional therapy.
