Abstract
The coping strategies of three young adults with cancer were described as these strategies related to the process of maturing. Threats and coping strategies were categorized according to Heath's model of the process of maturing. (Heath, Douglas. Maturity and Competence. New York: Gardner Press, Inc., 1977). All subjects faced similar threats and used a wide variety of positive and negative coping behaviors to deal with the threats, with a profound impact on their process of maturing. The two subjects who displayed more competent behavior before illness seemed to cope more maturely during illness. The subject with problems before he became ill had the greatest difficulty and used many negative coping mechanisms.
