Abstract
Standardized nursing care plans are ways to predefine the level of care for a selected patient population. The use of standardized care plans is not a common occurrence in the emergency department. The standardized care plans can be an effective tool used for monitoring quality assurance, assisting with orientation for new employees, an objective measure for performance evaluations, and assisting with documentation for the emergency department patient. Developing a system to standardize care starts with hospital and departmental standards and can be reflected in the standardized nursing care plan. Implications for the nursing administrator who uses the standardized nursing care plan will include issues related to quality assurance, staff orientation, performance evaluation, and nursing documentation.
