Abstract
This study investigates the perceptions of patients who have spent a part of their hospitalization in an intensive care unit. This patient population was asked to rank identified stressful events derived from the review of the literature, in order from most to least stressful, on the day following transfer from an intensive care unit. The patient population which numbered twenty-five, did the ranking of events by reviewing twenty-five 3 by 5 inch index cards with statements that described events which ore known to occur in intensive care and require coping in some form. One researcher, who guaranteed confidentiality, remained with the subjects as they completed the exercise. The ability of the population to do the exercise and the subsequent rankings provide the descriptive information which completes the study.
