Abstract
The challenge of managing todays' health care system is enormous. Hospitals are faced with ever increasing demands to provide quality health care to a more complex patient population with significantly less financial and human resources. The nursing shortage has had significant impact on the health care industry. Hospitals, as well as other health care providers, have become competitors for the limited supply of registered nurses. The volume of recruitment and retention strategies employed is enormous. In this essay I will review the literature on recruitment and retention strategies and present the concept of autonomous staffing as a retention strategy.
