Abstract
Surgery in and of itself may cause great stress and fear in persons of all ages. The preschool child, however, can be seen as extremely susceptible to the psychological and emotional impact of surgery. Their limited cognitive understanding, misconceptions, anxiety regarding body integrity, and attachment to parents are sources of this vulnerability. The guidelines were written to facilitate the provision of a significant preparation and support for preschool children by health professionals.
