Abstract
Well child visits can be an opportunity for growth and increased self-esteem in a child. A review of the literature describing preschool children's developmental level, preschoolers' understanding of health and illness, approaches to preparing preschool children for health care events, and health care professionals' approaches influencing preschool children's responses is presented. The review of the literature provides the foundation for a guide for health care professionals on assisting preschool children through well child visits. An annotated bibliography on books for the preschooler going to the doctor is provided. Recommendations for further research in the area of preschool children's responses to well child visits are suggested in the conclusion.
