Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine patients' perceptions of their needs during the initial phase of recovery from myocardial infarctions. Twenty male patients who had experienced their first myocardial infarctions were interviewed. The interview form was a thirty-question, semi-structured guide which was constructed by the investigator. The data collected was categorized and tabulated according to physiological, learning, and psycho-social needs identified by the patients. The physiological needs perceived most frequently by the respective percent of subjects included: the need for pain relief (100%); and needs regarding their diets and appetites (70%). The learning needs identified most frequently by the subjects included: to be kept informed of their progress (90%): and to be oriented to the coronary care· units (85%). The following psycho-social needs were related most often by the participants: to have someone with whom they could share their concerns (90%): fear (85%): time and day orientation (85%): spiritual needs (85%): needs for solitude (70%): and concerns about death (70%). The investigator recommends the development of specific continuing education programs for nurses working with myocardial infarction patients.
