Abstract
Through a search of published literature, this paper identifies visual and hearing alterations in the ederly and their physiological basis. It explores the role of the nurse in assessment of vision and hearing, and in planning of interventions that will assist the affected elderly in continuing to lead as pleasant and fulfilling a life as possible. Suggestions are made for research studies that will evaluate the effectiveness of the nurses role in assessment and intervention in the elderly with these alterations in sensory perception.
