Abstract
The adolescent mother has unique needs because of the demands of motherhood and adolescence. The purpose of this essay is to provide a guide which will identify the needs of adolescent mothers between 12-15 years of age. A review of literature includes: adolescent development, concepts of mothering, and instruments that are currently being used to identify the needs of adolescent mothers. The assessment guide is based upon the review of literature, and the cognitive development of the adolescent. It is designed for use by health professionals when planning the parenting needs of these young mothers; in hospitals, clinics, or other community settings. The assessment guide consists of three categories: the personal, social and infant care concerns of 12-15 year old mothers. Instructions for its use are included. It is expected that information derived from the assessment will assist in formulating strategies to meet the needs of 12-15 year old mothers.
