Abstract
This essay is a review of the literature on studies of depression in patients with heart disease. Findings from the literature describing depression as a response to loss associated with illness, the incidence of depression in the post coronary population, physiological and psychological correlates, identifying characteristics of the depressed patient with heart disease, and management modalities effective in reducing or alleviating depression were presented. The role of nursing in assisting patients with heart disease and their families in reducing or alleviating depression and in promoting optimal coping and optimal cardiac rehabilitation was developed from research data found in the literature.
