Abstract
The rapid rise in the population of the elderly is occurring simultaneously with the decreasing supply of Registered Nurses. The nursing shortage and continued fiscal restraints challenges the leaders in the nursing home industry to develop innovative ways to provide quality care. The American Medical Association has developed the Registered Care Technician concept in an effort to address the shortage of "bedside care-givers". Nurses are united in their opposition to the AMA proposal and are searching for innovative ways to continue to provide quality care. In this essay, literature on the subject of nursing assistant turnover in nursing homes has been reviewed and summarized. Expansion of the nursing assistant role, by the development of a career ladder was proposed as an approach to address the nursing shortage. Career mobility for the nursing assistant as a management strategy would enhance job satisfaction and reduce turnover.
