Abstract

Guidelines were designed for nurses who teach preadolescents about diabetes mellitus based upon the need for age-appropriate diabetic education. The essay includes a review of literature in two major categories: preadolescent development, and the preadolescent's response to diabetes mellitus. The guidelines assist nurses who teach the preadolescent, either newly diagnosed, or needing review of diabetes and its management. The guidelines may apply in the hospital setting, at clinic, camp, or home.
