Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to provide a tool to assist nurses in their efforts to assess the adolescent mother's ability to care for her infant with a health problem. A review of the literature included: the cognitive development of the adolescent, adolescent identity, and the adolescent mother's reaction to the birth of her infant with a health problem. Based upon the review of the literature, an assessment tool was designed for use by staff nurses who work with infants with health problems. The assessment tool consists of three sections: (1) personal data obtained from the medical record, (2) information provided by the adolescent mother through self-report , and (3) assessment by the staff nurse. Guidelines for implementation of the tool were also established. It is anticipated that the nurse who can accurately assess the adolescent mother's knowledge level and attainment of maternal role will be better able to formulate and implement a teaching plan that will enable the adolescent mother to successfully care for her infant with a health problem.
