Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to construct a game to reinforce diabetic teaching to the school-age child. Diabetes mellitus is a disease which can be controlled effectively by following a set of rules. Since the school-age child is engaged in concrete-operational thought and is set on accomplishing tasks, governed by rules, this game is a concrete means of reinforcing the rules necessary to live healthfully with diabetes mellitus. A review of the literature concerning related issues of coping strategies, parental reactions, peer issues and nursing measures is included. By using this information and capitalizing on the reinforcing effects of the board game, it is hoped that nurses and parents will be more effective caregivers of the school-age child with diabetes mellitus.
