Abstract
An important responsibility of the hospital nurse administrator is to provide staffing for patient care on a 24-hour basis. Professional nurses comprise the resource which provides this care. An important member who rounds out the 24-hour care continuum in providing this care is the nurse who works the night shift. However, there are various health, social, and environmental factors which may seriously impact on the night worker. This essay will review the many influences that come into play for the nurse who works nights and explore various means to offset some of their negative effects. It will seek to point out to the nurse administrator various problems and concerns faced by the staff nurse who works nights in hopes of having the nurse administrator implement a climate that will promote staffing for the night shift. In addition, strategies will be examined which may provide a more healthful environment. Administrative recommendations will be made to promote greater satisfaction and adjustment for the professional nurse working nights in the hospital organizational environment.
