Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of separation among families as a result of occupational requirements. The literature identifies a number of common reactions many of which may be negative as a result of occupational separation. Because nurses need to be able to identify the presence and intensity of these effects so as to provide care for these families, an assessment form was developed. The form utilizes key concepts from literature based upon theory and research on separation, stress, family, and nursing. Health and social effects of separation upon military families in particular were utilized. Based upon a review of the literature, the tool may have significant application in environments where occupational choices or requirements include family separations of a frequent nature. The assessment form requires testing and validation.
