Abstract
In order to better meet the stress-induced needs of patients admitted to ICU, and their families, an information booklet was developed. A literature review revealed that a need to feel hope, to receive adequate, timely, and understandable information, and to be near loved ones were ranked most important by families. Loneliness, precipitated by restricted visitation schedules, was described as a factor in inducing ICU psychosis, and contributing to increasing levels of stress in patients and families. The open visiting hours used by the unit for which this booklet was written are in keeping with the family philosophy of that unit, allowing patients to be, or have family, close as much as they need. Daily information updates required by patients and family to maintain their coping abilities will be provided by the nursing staff on a continuing basis. a patient family orientation booklet for ICU was the result of this essay. The FOG and SMOG Readability formulas were applied to the booklet to determine readability and understandability, estimated to be at Grade nine.
