Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to explore the concept of preceptorship as a strategy for the orientation of newly-employed nursing staff. Although reference was made to the use of clinical preceptorship in several different types of situations, the primary focus of this study was on the graduate nurse transition into a staff position. A review of the literature describes the theoretical basis for clinical preceptorship, compares this teaching/learning strategy to traditional orientation programs and considers the impact that current health care issues have on the orientation process . This study provides a composite of the current use of nursing preceptorships and identifies implications for future use within nursing practice.
