Abstract

A nursing tool was developed to obtain quantifiable data regarding risk factors for infection in the hospitalized patient. The tool was designed to be utilized by staff nurses, clinical specialists or nurse researchers. Using criteria obtainable at the bedside and with supplemented data available from the patient's chart, the nurse is able to apply the Infection Risk Factor Inventory. The identification of risk factors for nosocomial infection allows the nurse to evaluate the patient's potential for infection. Guidelines on the use of the tool are included. The essay also includes a review of the literature on risk factors associated with hospital-acquired infection. From the review, three major areas of predisposing factors have been identified : 1) environmental factors, 2) invasive treatments and procedures, and 3) factors related to the patient's intrinsic resistance to the acquisition of infection. These three areas serve as the framework for the Infection Risk Inventory.
