Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to develop a conceptual model for nursing assessment of the family system. A nursing assessment of the whole family is important since interaction with the patient often includes interaction with the family as well, especially in Parent/ Child nursing. The discipline of family theory/therapy has much to offer the nursing profession by way of assessments and approaches to the family. Some of these theories are briefly discussed to demonstrate various styles. Individual theorists do tend to focus on one particular area and the need is felt for a more eclectic approach. Barnhill attempts to provide this eclectic assessment in citing eight dimensions of healthy family functioning. Based upon Barnhill's dimensions, this essay presents a series of questions which would enable the practitioner to assess family functioning in a comprehensive manner. As specific family needs are recognized, the practitioner can turn to more appropriate and indepth literature to support approaches and to increase understanding. To aid utilization, a model of these dimensions as a "tree" with the family as the basis, or "trunk", is devised.
