Abstract
This essay reviews the literature from 1942 through 1981 regarding the concept of loss as a major fear of the hospitalized adolescent. The review includes the fears affecting adolescents aging from thirteen to eighteen years old. Loss identified from the literature in three components includes : 1. loss of body integrity, 2. loss of control, and 3. separation or abandonment . Nursing strategies to assist the adolescent to cope with loss will be cited from the literature. It was found that hospitalized adolescents feared mutilation. One study showed that the greatest fear of the adolescent population was losing control while under anesthesia. The findings identified that adolescents feared separation and abandonment from peers and parents. Finally, several studies depicted that the fear of death was imminent with hospitalized adolescents. There are three conceivable outcomes of this study. To understand the concept of loss as a major fear of the hospitalized adolescent, 2. To identify nursing strategies in relation to the fear of loss, 3. To continue nursing research examining the impact of nursing strategies related to loss.
