Abstract
A nursing innovation protocol for the application of music with premature infants who have bronchopulmonary dysplasia is presented. The purpose of this essay is twofold: (1) to enhance an understanding of the use of music and its benefits, and (2) to provide guidelines useful in the application of music as an adjuvant to nursing care. The essay includes a review of the literature on premature infant development, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and music therapy. A nursing innovation protocol for the introduction of music with a premature infant with bronchopulmonary dysplasia is presented. This essay illustrates the importance of environmental neonatal nursing.
