Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to present a family assessment tool based on a family conceptual framework. This family conceptual framework is derived from Dorothea Orem's self-care model of nursing practice, family crisis theory and selected concepts of family functioning. This essay documents the need for the development of such a tool and includes a review of the literature from various disciplines relating to the family from the context of crisis theory and concepts of family functioning. An explanation of the family conceptual framework and the process utilized to develop the family assessment tool are also presented. Suggestions for establishing validity and reliability of the tool as well as recommendations for implementation of the tool are included.
