Abstract
The purposes of this thesis were (a) to establish the outlines of a theory of nursing based on the nurturance process and (b) to establish the outlines of the applied knowledge of the theory through the construction of a model. Nurturance theory was reviewed in the works of Fromm, Allport, Maslow, Rogers, and Hanlon. Contemporary models of nursing, as exemplified by the works of Watson, Roy, Orem, and Peterson and Mayer were reviewed in terms of their completeness as measured by the available knowledge of the nurturance process. The postulates and theorems of the theory of nursing based on the nurturance process identify nursing as the process of cybernetic rehabilitation necessitated by trauma to the cybernetic agency caused by illness and injury. The model identifies six degrees of trauma to the cybernetic agency, each of which requires a different point of intervention on the part of the nurse. The thesis concludes with implications for research in nursing, the practice of nursing and nursing education.
