Abstract

Within the past ten years considerable attention has been drawn to the feasibility of transplanting blood vessel segments in humans as a substitute in trauma or disease. Various methods have been advocated for the preservation of these vessel segments. In the following series of experiments twelve dogs were operated upon. Vessels, preserved in dog serum and Ringer's solution, in Ringer's solution alone, and by freeze-drying, were transplanted into artificially created defects of their aortas. The animals were then observed, and patency of the vessels verified by aortograms and autopsy.
