Abstract
The essay focuses on the development of a nursing intervention, the use of parents' tape recorded stories, which can be used with preschool children in sick child care settings to help reduce separation anxiety. The auditory stimulation produced by listening to the parents' tape recorded stories allows the child to use fantasy to evoke the parent's image. The essay is composed of two sections: 1) a review of the literature and 2) guidelines for the use of parents' tape recorded stories. The review of literature includes a discussion of the development of sick child care programs in the United States and the developmental characteristics of the preschool child.
