Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine if the use of a specific protocol (the concluding process) would affect the bereavement outcome scores of sudden death survivors. A convenience sample of thirty survivors was used. The fifteen survivors from the experimental group were exposed to the concluding process while the fifteen survivors from the control group were not. An interview tool entitled "The Bereavement Stress Profile" was used to interview the participating survivors at 4-12 weeks post-death. The hypothesis that the concluding process would positively affect bereavement scores was not supported. However, when the range for the Bereavement Stress scores was redefined to better reflect the scores of the study's participants, the experimental group had smaller percentages of survivors in the heavy overload range than did the control group. Comparison between the concluding and non-concluding groups was also done using multivariate analysis.
