Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe behavioral indicators of locus of control for three patients with new colostomies using the tool "Behavioral Indicators of Locus of Control" devised by Schroeder. An indicator regarding preferred teaching-learning atmosphere was added to the tool by the researcher. In addition, the purpose of this study was to compare the coping mechanisms used by those subjects with a tendency toward an internal locus of control with those used by the subject with a tendency toward an external locus of control. It was found that the coping mechanisms used by the two clients with a tendency toward an internal locus of control were active in nature. The client with a tendency toward an external locus of control coped in a passive manner. Analysis of data revealed that three additional behavioral indicators could be added to the tool. They are (1) persons with an internal locus of control cope actively with their health problems, and persons with an external locus of control cope in a passive manner; (2) males with an internal locus of control tend to have traditional attitudes toward women; and (3) persons with an external locus of control have a tendency toward depression. Nursing strategies were recommended based on locus of control tendencies, and an effort was been made to quantify the observations so as to provide a model for future use of the tool.
