Abstract

Interest in the role of sodium in drinking water has recently been stimulated by reports which suggest that this element influences cardiovascular death rates. Beneficial results by restriction of sodium in the diet have also been noted in the treatment of cardiac failure, hypertension, and edema. Because dietary sodium intake is so drastically restricted, any additional source, such as the drinking water supply, will offset the restrictions imposed by the diet. In view of the importance this element plays in human physiology, research was conducted in the State of Wisconsin to determine if correlations exist between the presence of sodium in drinking water and cardiovascular-renal disease. Additional research also examines the effects of water softeners on the concentrations of sodium in the softened water supply.
