Abstract

The usual method of manufacturing straight bevel gears is by using generating machines that cut a blank until all teeth have been properly shaped, and sometimes with hobbing cutters. Milling of bevel gears is used for roughing cuts because of the inaccurate results obtained by such method. A very accurate method to cut spur gears has already been developed for use in the versatile NC milling machines. This research attempts to duplicate the same procedure and push it a little bit further, by using CNC milling centers to create the complicated geometry of straight bevel gears, and to apply concepts of Computer-Aided Engineering by doing a simple, initial finite element analysis on the part. In that way, the effectiveness of the integration of design and manufacture on the computer can be assessed. The results prove that CNC milling of bevel gear teeth is, under some circumstances, a feasible alternate way of cutting bevel gears.
