Abstract

While most liquid-gas or liquid-liquid contacting devices presently available are of vertical flow design, many processes could be simplified with the use of horizontal contacting equipment. A new horizontal device called the Two-Phase Contactor which is capable of promoting a mass and/or heat transfer operation between a liquid and a gas or a liquid and a liquid has been developed by the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company and is being investigated in this report. The device consists basically of a horizontal cylinder containing a series of perforated discs mounted on a central shaft. A liquid flows through the bottom of the cylinder and as the shaft rotates, the discs pick up a thin layer of the liquid bringing it in contact with the gas stream flowing through the upper section of the cylinder. A very large interfacial area is thus provided between the two phases. In the case where a liquid-liquid operation is desired, the higher density liquid flows through the bottom and the lighter liquid flows through the top with the discs bringing one phase in contact with the other. This thesis consists of an experimental investigation of the mass-transfer process in such a device using a water-air system. The effect of the many variables involved in the process such as rotational speed, flow rates, spacing between the discs, size and arrangement of the perforations in the discs, and the clearance between the edge of the disc and the casing wall will all be studied. Aside from the academical aspects of the problem, there is also a strong practical motivation, namely, the many applications for which this device is suitable. The problem represents a new concept which has not yet been investigated to any large extent, thus making these results an original body of information.
