Abstract

An experimental investigation was conducted on the downflow of air water mixtures in two rectangular lucite test sections. The investigation was performed over a large range of fluid velocities and qualities. Information is presented on the factors influencing the void fraction, flow patterns, and slip ratios. A gamma ray attenuation technique was used to determine the void fractions and the slip ratios were determined from a simple mass balance. The void fractions and slip ratios of this investigation are compared with existing data. A correlation for predicting the downflow void fraction in terms of the Froude number and the volumetric flow rate ratio is presented.
