Abstract
The objective of this essay is to compare two mathematical methods for modeling a particular soil-structure interaction problem. A buried concrete box culvert is modeled using ANSYS, a general purpose finite element computer program. Results of this analysis are compared with CANDE, a program developed for culvert analysis. The box culvert is also modeled using BEASY, a general purpose boundary element computer program. A description of both the finite element method and boundary element method is provided in the essay. A comparison of the two methods is made and the advantages and disadvantages of each are listed.
