Abstract
This study investigated an optional linear rail vertical-drop impact test system (VDlTS). The study reviews present athletic helmet testing methods and parameters used to identify system response of a vertical drop testing apparatus. The study's primary objective was to validate the VDITS, through the comparison of free fall tests vs VDlTS tests. The free fall and VDlTS system were compared at three different velocities (5.5, 7 & 8.5 MPH). The parameters used in the comparison consisted of: force and moment histories; displacement histories; work produced by each system; and spectrum analysis. The final analysis involved mathematical modeling of the two systems response, utilizing springs and masses incorporated into single and two mass systems.
